August 11, 2019
We all survived our first week of school. Everyone seemed to make that transition to second grade quite smoothly. I am enjoying hearing the adventures of summer and first grade as I get to know your children. We have some very kind, helpful kids in our classroom, and I love hearing such kind words. We have some creative kids who loved building and engineering last week. We have some shy kids who are learning that Room 12 is a safe place to take risks. We have some chatty kids who are keeping me on my toes! I am loving every minute of getting to know your 23 children! Thank you for sharing them with me for the next 176 school days!
Math
We are starting the year tackling how to use a number line to add and subtract. They will become experts at making their own number lines and being able to use those to solve simple addition and subtraction problems. We will also be using the next couple of weeks to deepen their understanding of "TEN". When given a number lower than ten, they should automatically be able to tell you how much more is needed to make ten. This helps them throughout the year (and beyond) as they are adding and subtracting bigger numbers.
Language Arts
The students were so excited to get their 2nd grade anthologies last week. We read our first story which was about how we can depend on our friends! Wow! What a lifelong blessing friends and family can be. We will be introducing journal writing this next week, and our first grammar focus is nouns.
AR
Our class will be going to the computer lab on Tuesday afternoon. They will be taking the AR placement test to find out their AR level. This level tells them what books are "just right" for them to read independently. Kids love to read chapter books! However, often times they are not able to comprehend them due to the vocabulary and the length of the book. By finding out what their AR level is, we can work to find books that will help boost their reading fluency, vocabulary, and ultimately, their comprehension. I will be sending the information home with your child either Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon.
Back to School Night Form
Please make sure you return your child's form from the Back to School Night packet. That includes the Contact List portion so I can get the Class Contact List made for those who would like to be part of it. Also, if you have not returned the Parent Survey that was on your child's desk at Meet and Greet, or that I sent home on the first day of school, please return that, too!
ClassDojo
The class was so excited to start filling up their coin containers when they got their ClassDojo points on Friday. Please sign up to follow your child on ClassDojo. I send reminders of upcoming events, as well as pictures and videos of school activities. If you do not want your child included in these pictures of videos, please let me know!! The login in information for ClassDojo was on your child's desk at Meet and Greet, or I sent home on the first day of school. If you no longer have it, please let me know. I can send home another one.
Picture Day
Wednesday, August 14th is picture day for our class. Ordering information was sent home last week. Every child will have their picture taken, but you will only receive a set of pictures if you choose to order them. You can choose to pay online before picture day, or you can send the order envelope back with your child on Wednesday.
Weekly Reports
On Friday afternoon, your child should have filled in their Weekly Report for their class behavior. If they did not do that, they were not listening, because we filled them out at the same time. Please do not sign the Weekly Reports until it is filled in on Friday. Also, please make sure your child is not filling it out at home during the week. These always get filled out on Friday afternoon. Please remember to sign it every weekend, so that your child can get their classroom coins for having it signed.
Classroom Donations
Thank you so much to those who donated $20 for classroom supplies, an additional $5 to help cover science supplies, and sent in additional classroom supplies. I greatly appreciate everything!
I think that is everything for this week. Please let me know if you have any question or concerns.
