December 6, 2019
December is one of my favorite months to teach. First of all, I love everything about the Christmas season (except the cold!). I love the excitement, the decorations, the music, and the overall upbeat feeling of Christmas with children. We had such a great week in Room 12! We are learning a lot, but having some Christmas fun, too!
There are many events coming up that I want you to be aware of. Please read on to get lots of important information about them.
Holiday Shop
The Holiday Shop will be next week in the library. Any kids that bring money will be able to go shop during a designated time. Please send your child with money on ONE or TWO days next week and not every day. They do miss class time to shop. I already told the class today, but they need to bring their money inside an envelope with their name on it, a Ziploc bag with their name on it, a wallet, a small purse, etc. Please do not send your child with loose money!! I told them that if they bring loose money, they will not be able to shop! They will have to take it home and bring it back the following day in and envelope, Ziploc bag, wallet, small purse, etc. Too many times, kids lose their money or drop it and we don’t know who it belongs to. Thank you for your help!
Winter Concert
Next Wednesday night (December 11th) is the winter concert. Children need to arrive in the MPR at 6:15pm. They can come dressed nicely and in anything that represents a holiday that they celebrate this time of year. The concert will begin at 6:30pm with 2nd grade going first. Then 3rd grade will be singing. Your child must stay throughout the entire concert!! I will not be able to release them early. The concert will be over by 7pm.
Holiday Traditions
Just a reminder that holiday traditions posters are due next Friday. These were sent home before Thanksgiving vacation. The poster is the paper that I sent home. Your child does not need to create a larger poster or a poster board for this. Make sure you and your child read the informational sheet that went home with it, so they know how they are going to be graded.
Canned Food Dance
We will once again be having the Canned Food Dance next Friday. We are collecting cans of food for families in need, and this also helps our 5th graders earn their DARE points. Please send in at least one can of food with your child, so they can attend the dance. As a class, we need 24 cans of food. The class with the most cans will earn a cookie party!
DonorsChoose
Your child has probably told you about all of the wonderful books that we received through a DonorsChoose project that I created. We have over 40 new Dog Man, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Captain Underpants, Owl Diaries, Missy’s Super Duper Royal Deluxe, and Bad Guys chapter books. These books have sparks a HUGE interest in reading chapter books in our classroom. I wish I would have videotaped them reading together with our new books today. This project was funded by my family and friends, and I am so happy!
I have created a new project for our classroom, too! It is all hands-on STEM activities for the kids to use when they complete their work or during extra time. These items include Legos, gravity marble run, open-ended puzzles, mind-teasers, building kits, magnets and more! We already have $50 that we will use toward this project that was donated by a family in our classroom. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation, please follow the link below. The project is not officially “live”, so you can give a gift card that will be used toward the project when it goes “live” next week.

Six Flags Read to Succeed
I sent home a reading log with login information where your child can earn a FREE ticket to Six Flags. This is all completed at home by them reading 6 hours, and you logging it on the website. Please check your child’s folder for the flyer! I will give them their ticket in May. I think the program ends in March, but the website will tell you.
Jackets, Coats, and Scarves…oh my!
With the cold weather here for a while, it is a good time to check and make sure your child’s name is on their cold weather gear. You would be surprised what kids remove during recess on cold days, so please make sure their name is on everything! Also, please write their name on their umbrellas, too.
Spirit Week
Not next week but the following week, December 16 – 20, we will be having a school-wide spirit week. Please see the email I sent earlier with information.
Monday – Ugly Christmas Sweater
Tuesday – Twin Day
Wednesday – Holiday Colors
Thursday – Crazy Holiday Attire
Friday – PJ day (my favorite!!!)
I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Hopefully some extra rest will help the sniffles that have arrived. As always, if you have any questions, please let me know!
