Happy Friday! This week went really fast in our classroom. I can’t believe it is already Friday. Today we had a lockdown drill and next week we will be having a fire drill. We talked about how we have drills just to practice and that there is nothing scary about a drill. I also told them that in my 24 years of teaching, I have never been in a fire or earthquake, but we still practice. They did a great job during the lockdown drill today. We close our blinds, cover our windows, close the skylights, and stay quietly under our desks. I hope we never need to use any of the drills we practice, but please know that my focus is keeping your children safe the entire time that you are trusting me to care for them!! After only 9 days, they all have a permanent spot in my heart!
Homework
Your child brought home their first homework packet today. I walked them through the packet today, and I modeled how to do the entire thing. Their spelling words for each week are located in their folder, along with their Weekly Report. Their homework packet is due back next Friday at the beginning of the day.
Completed Work Packet
Each Monday, your child will be bringing home their packet of work that they completed in class during the prior week. Please look over the work with your child. Everything is either corrected as a whole class (math is almost always done this way) or I correct it. If it is corrected in RED, your child corrected their paper while we corrected it as a class and either a student or I wrote the answers on the board. They are in charge of listening and following along with us. If it is corrected in A COLOR that is not read, I corrected it.
Unfinished Work
I give a lot of opportunities during the week for kids to finish things that they might not have finished during the specific lesson. Many times kids choose to silently read instead of completing their unfinished work. I remind them to complete things before Fun Friday, because everything has to be done for them to participate in Fun Friday. If they do not finish something by the end of the day on Friday, it will come home with them in their Kelly folder to be completed over the weekend and returned on Monday.
Back to School Forms
I sent home a checklist today with your child that shows what I have received from your family – Parent Survey, supply donation, Behavior and Homework form, Contact List, and signed up on ClassDojo. If you need a copy of one of the forms, please let me know!
Accelerated Reader
Yesterday I sent home the information about Accelerated Reader (AR). In the packet was the Home Connect website and login for your child so you can see how they are doing taking AR tests. There was also a copy of their reading level, based on the reading test they took on Tuesday in the computer lab. Please use this information to help guide you as you choose books for your child to read.
