Anyone else ready for summer weather?? This cold weather is not my favorite, but it is kind of cute to see the pink noses and cheeks every morning when I greet the class at the classroom door. We had a fun week celebrating the 100th day of school and our AR pizza today. I love spending these sweet moments with your children. Next week is a short week. There is no school on Monday in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. There is no school on Friday, because it is a teacher training day.
Language Arts
We are in our unit on Fairy Tales right now. We are reading lots of variations of stories and comparing them. It is always fun to see how authors take the same basic story but make the characters, settings, and problems different.
We have been working on adjectives lately. You will notice on your child’s spelling test that they are circling adjectives in the sentences that the write. Most kids are great at telling me adjectives to describe something, but when it comes time to identify them in text, it is more challenging. When your child is reading to you at home or you are reading to them, ask them to find an adjective on the page. Did you know that your kids should still be reading to you and listening to you read?? It helps with their fluency and confidence. When kids read in their head, they just skip over words they don’t know and often don’t focus on comprehension. (Just in case you need a little refresher…adjectives are words that describe nouns. The TALL boy at a JUICY popsicle.)
Math
Telling time is going pretty well! Make sure your child is showing you how they are doing by finding some math apps or online games where they can dazzle you!
Baseball by the Books
Yesterday I sent home information on the Baseball by the Books program. It is sponsored by the Stockton Ports. Your child needs to read 10 books between now and the end of February to earn 2 FREE tickets to a Stockton Ports baseball game.
Homework
There is not a spelling list this week, so homework is different. reading is so important, I do want the kids to read 3 times for their homework next week, even though there is no school on Monday. They can read this weekend, too!
They have two math worksheets to do. We have done at least 10 like those in class. Most are great at them!
There is a graphing paper where they need to play “rock, paper, scissor”s with someone ten times. They will tally the outcome of each game. Then they will create a graph using their information. Then they need to answer the questions using their graph. I did one in class for them on Wednesday. Today they played it with a partner. I was correcting them after school today, and many struggled on the questions. Please go over the questions with your child, so it is a teaching tool!
Have a great weekend!
