Tomorrow is Leap Day! We had fun talking today about how old we would be if we were born on Leap Year/Day. They thought it was funny that they would be two years old…haha! We had such a great week in Room 12. It is so hard to believe that next week we will already be in March!
Language Arts/Social Studies
We have begun my favorite unit in 2nd grade…heroes! I love teaching them about the amazing people that have made our country and world what it is today. We only focus on the good in people. I hope that your kids are sharing interesting facts about the people we are learning about. So far we have learned about Martin Luther King, Jr., George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Jackie Robinson. Next week we will learn about Ruby Bridges and Harriet Tubman.
This week in during our spelling test, we continued our focus on contractions, proper nouns, and adjectives. Some kids are still confused about adjectives, so we will continue to work on those in class.
Math
Our 3-digit addition and subtraction unit is going well. We have worked with strategies that they like and one that they are not as comfortable doing. We talked quite a bit today about how we all learn differently, and one of the reasons I love math is that there are so many ways to get the same answer. So we take the strategies that work for us, and we master them. We take the ones that confuse us most, and we toss those into the back of our brain! They thought that was funny. Next week we will be continuing this unit and talking about estimating numbers to see if our answer makes sense. So many things going on!!
Science
Our new unit is about materials and the properties of those materials. It is so hard to fit everything in, so I am hoping to dabble in this a bit next week. If it doesn’t make it next week, we will definitely start is the following week.
Fun Run
Our school wide fundraiser has begun! This fundraiser earns money for teachers and our school. A portion of the money you raise goes directly to our classroom, and a portion will be helping music, our school PTO and other projects. We watched our first video with the program today, and the first challenge has been set. If you log onto the FunRun.com website today and register your child, they will get a prize on Monday. The class with the most registered students will get a popcorn party on Monday, too!
Read Across America
